Joy As A Toy
GIL MORTIO, CLEMENT NOURRY and JEAN-PHILIPPE DE GHEEST formed JOY AS A TOY to satisfy their love of fun and games. The band’s main ambition is to get the audience to dance to their raw and largely improvised rock music which is based on powerful riffs and radical atmosphere changes. The trio is capable of suddenly switching from a simple melody to sonic madness that verges on trippy, psychedelic music.
As a result, they will wear the audience out and leave it feeling empty. But the band might not get everyone to dance. They are very much aware of this paradox. They may rule the dancefloor just as well as they may suck the energy out of the listener. They have even made this Joy As A Toy’s registrered trademark since they claim to play "tennis pop" and "vampire rock".

Nous ne sommes pas peu fiers de pouvoir vous annoncer que nous collaborerons officiellement à la 29ème édition du BIFFF (Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival). Le label programmera une nuit (musicale bien entendu) clôturant la journée du samedi 9 avril 2011 durant laquelle se tiendront la 5ème Zombie Parade et la projection d'un film de zombies de circonstance. La nuit aura lieu au Magasin 4, juste en face de Tour & Taxis où se déroule le festival.
Le moins que l'on puisse dire, c'est que nous sommes parvenus à composer un programme résolument BIFFF. Tous les groupes du label seront là auxquels il faudra ajouter Agent Palmer, Philippe Petit, Cercueil et Zombie Zombie.
Petit tour des forces en présence.
ZOMBIE ZOMBIE (FR)
Qui mieux que Zombie Zombie pour clôturer une journée placée sous le signe des zombies? Le duo parisien formé par Cosmic Neman (également batteur de Herman Düne) et Etienne Jaumet revendique depuis ses débuts sa passion pour le krautrock et une certaine forme de musique cinématique. La musique de Zombie Zombie évoque inévitablement des groupes comme Neu, Silver Apples, Suicide, Goblin ou les BO de John Carpenter. Le groupe a d'ailleurs déjà rendu hommage à Carpenter et son film The Thing, dans un court métrage d'animation pour le EP Driving This Road Until Death Sets you free.
Ce qui devait donc arriver arriva ! Après quatre saisons de concerts qui ont immanquablement provoqué l'hystérie un peu partout dans le monde, Zombie Zombie se lance dans un nouveau projet : réinterpréter sur un disque évènement les thèmes des films de John Carpenter, et en profiter pour présenter un tout nouveau live.

Egalement des grands mordus de l'imagerie fantastico-horifique, les lillois de Cercueil viendront présenter leur deuxième album, enregistré en Angleterre au Toybox Studios sous les auspices d'Ali Chant (The Kills, Gravenhurst, PJ Harvey, ...).
Le trio manie l'art de marier une base rock très new-wave et parfois agressive à des ambiances atmosphériques et contemplatives. Il prétend pratiquer le "goth'n' roll", tout en reconnaissant que le genre n'existe pas mais -si inventé- irait du disco à Lovecraft en passant par Boards Of Canada et Poni Hoax.

Même pas 1 an après la sortie de son premier album sur Cheap Satanism Records, Joy As A Toy reviendra avec du nouveau matériel de circonstance: un répertoire inspiré par Goblin, groupe de rock progressif connu pour avoir composé les bandes originales du cultissime Zombie (Dawn Of The Dead) de Georges Romero et d'un paquet de films de Dario Argento.
Joy As A Toy est un trio bruxellois dont la musique se veut exutoire et fédératrice. Un rock hybride, foisonnant et échappant à toute linéarité qui passe sans sourciller de mélodies simples et aérées à des délires soniques proches du psychédélisme. Le groupe s'auto-proclame pratiquer de la "tennis pop" et du "vampire rock", ce qui rend leur présence à l'affiche de cette nuit d'autant plus pertinente.
Pour cette musique inspirée par Goblin, il ne faut pas s'attendre à des reprises, mais plutôt à une musique goblinesque à la sauce Joy As A Toy ou alors à du Joy As A Toy goblinesque. Le groupe sera accompagné pour l'occasion par l'illustre Pierre Vervloesem ( X-Legged Sally, CACA).
PHILIPPE PETIT (fr)
Grand activiste marseillais militant pour la diffusion et la reconnaissance des musiques rock et expérimentales depuis le début des années 80, Philippe Petit est également un musicien-sonoriste hyperactif, avec moult projets et collaborations. Il a collaboré, notamment via son formidable et puissant collectif Strings Of Consciousness, avec une dream-team hallucinante de personnalités aussi diverses que : Lydia Lunch, Eugene Robinson (Oxbow), Pete Simonelli (Enablers), Scott McCloud (Girls Against Boys), My Brightest Diamond, Jarboe, etc...
Particulièrement intéressé par les bande-sonores de films, Philippe Petit crée une musique fortement originale et peut-être présenté comme un "agent de voyage musical" plus que comme un compositeur. Petit utilise des tourne-disques et un laptop pour construire de denses couches électroniques, prendre avantage ou "caresser-muter" le matériau vinyl.
Philippe Petit viendra présenter Henry: The Iron Man, album inspiré des longs-métrages Tetsuo : The Iron Man et Eraserhead et gratifiera l'audience d'un DJ Set basé sur des extraits de bandes originales de films de la Hammer.
KEIKI vs BABY FIRE(be)
Si Philippe Petit cite le réalisateur japonais Shinya Tsukamoto à travers son film Testuo, c'est au film Vital du même réalisateur que Keiki rend hommage sur Waltham Holy Cross, leur 2ème album sorti en octobre 2009 sur Cheap Satanism Records.
Le duo bruxellois de "satanic pop" applique une recette qui peut paraître simple : chant assuré, riffs de guitare foudroyants, boîtes à rythmes uniquement programmées en mode "Step" et puis, surtout, les sons surnaturels du theremin, instrument aussi difficile à dompter qu'un cheval des Grandes Plaines. Simple, non. Mais direct, catchy et groovy, oui.
Keiki jouera spécialement pour l'occasion avec le second duo de sa chanteuse,Dominique Van Cappellen-Waldock : Baby Fire.
Baby Fire est indirectement lié à un film qui aurait eu sa place au BIFFF en son temps. Le nom trouve son origine dans un entretien avec Ottis Toole, le tueur en série américain connu pour être l'amant et le complice de Henry Lee Lucas dont la relation troublée inspira le film culte Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer, de John Mc Naughton.
Baby Fire sortira son premier album intitulé No Fear sur Cheap Satanism Records le 15 mars prochain et pour prouver qu'elles n'ont peur de rien, il se murmure qu'elles devront affronter l'ignoble Crimson Executioner entre-apperçu dans le final du clip "Ironing Man" de Keiki.
VITAS GUERULAÏTIS (fr)
Le nom de Vitas Guerulatïs est bien évidemment un clin d'oeil à l'un des plus flamboyants joueurs de l'histoire du tennis. Vitas Gerulaïtis était ce fêtard invétéré, playboy des courts pas toujours au niveau de ses adversaires de premier plan et toujours véritable modèle pour des musiciens qui n'hésitent à faire leurs des slogans tels que "longue vie à tous ceux qui perdent" ou "rendons l'argent et le pouvoir aux stupides véritables".
Trio d'activistes français exilés à Bruxelles joue une musique qu'il définit comme un ensemble de bruit et de ruptures, des chants de filles et de garçons innombrables et tragiques ; du dada psyché kraut punk qui retourne le crâne.
Déjà coupable d'être le premier groupe signé sur Cheap Satanism Records à n'avoir aucune filiation directe ou indirecte avec le satanisme ou les mouvements anticléricaux, Vitas Guerulaïtis n'affiche donc aucune référence plus ou moins liée aux morts-vivants. Les musiciens ont promis de justifier leur présence sur l'affiche en étant accompagnés d'un sumo mort-vivant. Cela promet!
TRIKE (ca)
Au croisement de la pop électronique et des arts de la rue, Trike est un duo canadien qu'on ne pouvait pas ne pas programmer . Avec leur vidéo du morceau Zombie Tragedy, extrait de l'album Trike & The Vikings, paru sur Cheap Satanism Records en mai dernier, le groupe a vraisembablement signé la bande annonce officielle de cette soirée qui s'annonce d'ores et déjà mémorable!

Enfin, s'il n'a pas été transformé en zombie entre-temps, Agent Palmer assurera une petite after party pour tout ceux qui n'auront pas eu assez de ce copieux programme ou qui devront poireauter en attendant le premier métro.

Cheap Satanism Records invites all zombies to leave their remaining limbs on the dance floor for the second ZomBIFFF Night. Cheap Satanism Records has put together a very fitting program. You’ll be able to attend concerts of the English of Necro Deathmort, the Americans of Umberto, the Frenchmen of DesiCobra and finally Brussels’ very own Joy As A Toy. They’ll celebrate the release of their latest album Dead As A Dodo, inspired by the movies of Dario Argento and George A. Romero. To top it all off, there’ll be an after party with the DJ’s of Radio Campus Bruxelles behind the turntables. The Night will take place at the Brussels’ alternative concert venue Magasin 4.

Enablers are an indie rock band from San Francisco, California which features the poetry/spoken word of Pete Simonelli.
In addition to Simonelli, a published poet and writer who was working as a courier in the band's early years, the band's original lineup included Joe Goldring (guitar, formerly of Swans and Toiling Midgets and Touched by a Janitor), Kevin Thomson (guitar, Timco, Nice Strong Arm, Morning Champ, and Touched by a Janitor), and Yuma Joe Byrnes (drums, ex-Tarnation/Broken Horse, Touched by a Janitor). Enablers' first release the album End Note, released on Neurot Recordings in 2004. In 2006 they released the Output Negative Space album, described by PopMatters as having "a swagger that seems almost malevolent", and a split single with Redpanda. In 2007 they released the single-sided one track twelve-inch single The Achievement. In 2008 they released the Tundra album, a shared release between Lancashire and Somerset and Exile on Mainstream. The band's latest album is Blown Realms And Stalled Explosions, released in 2011. Doug Scharin, formerly of Codeine, HiM, June of 44, Rex, and Mice Parade, is now the band's drummer.

Live Footage is often described as some of the finest "surrealist soundtrack composers" in the making by scoring some of the most eclectic contemporary pieces in film, fashion, dance and in tune composing their own music. The days of a "standard band" have come to an end, and Live Footage epitomizes the modern band to the fullest. Conceived through the art of improvisation, Topu Lyo plays a 5 string electric cello, incorporating the use of live loops and a handful of electronics with no pre-recorded samples of any kind, and Mike Thies plays drums and keyboards, often simultaneously. This duo's formula is uniquely structured songs that allow ample room for improvisation while keeping the music’s integrity. The coherent complexity is what consistently wows new listener's ears away. Plain and simple, they are cinematic, experimental, yet still catchy and melodic. To define this Brooklyn duo's sound deems a broad answer. Elements of Dub, and Hip Hop can be heard alongside influences of psychedelic post rock, and jazz. Seth Feargolzia, mastermind behind multiple exploratory musical projects including, Dufus, 23 Psaegz, Hecky Yup, Forest Creature, will embark from Rochester, New York on yet another European tour this Autumn with the latest troupe, Faergolzia.
Seth is well known for subtly harmonic, experimental lyricism, dynamic structures, and whip-crack-acrobatic vocals. Celebrated as a vibrant example of what happens when a musician turns a genre like folk upside down and inside out, over time Faergolzia has come to represent something of a genre unto himself oft times nowhere near the folk aesthetic.
With a body of work that exceeds 20 albums and appearances in over 20 countries with the likes of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Dan Deacon, Animal Collective, Regina Spektor, Jeffrey Lewis, Moldy Peaches... Faergolzia is poised to put a spring in the step of his global following with his latest project, "#100 songs" wherein he has, in a short span of months, written 100 songs, and is currently releasing one fully produced song per week through his subscription site, faergolzia.com.

- Seth plays acoustic guitar and loop station.
- From California, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, John Ludington from Absynth Quintet, a critically acclaimed gypsy-grass band, “…the lovechild of Beck and Frank Zappa…” Seth and John toured Europe in 2013 with their collaborative project, Forest Creature.
