Cheap Satanism Records is teaming up again with Café Central to invite zombies from all walks of life to strut their stuff free of charge at the third ZomBIFFF Night. Shows from Umberto (US) and Baby Kruger (F) are on the menu. It will be the second time running that Umberto will make an appearance at the ZomBIFFF, this time to present his latest album, Night Has a Thousand Screams, out on Mogwai's Rock Action label. As for the set of Baby Kruger (not to be confused with Freddy Krueger), it promises to be mesmerizing since it will be inspired by Belgian cult film Amer, directed by Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani. Expect a metamusical journey with iridescent soundscapes, savage breaks and hyper real daydreams. Finally, Y|R and the French apprentice sorcerers from Unison will be spinning records and chopping heads off.

Three humans, three computers, one keyboard, one bass, one guitar, many pedals, more pedals, heavy beats, loops, noises, samples, dings and dongs, crackles, shake it, drink it, it's some 'PsyKraut Cinoisematic'.

  • 25/07/2013 > Jeffrey Lewis & The Rain + Chris Farmer @ Café Central

Born and raised New Yorker Jeffrey Lewis leads a double-life, as both a comic book writer/artist and a musician (or is that a triple-life?). His band also has a multi-faceted existence, restlessly exploring a stylistic swath from contemplative folk narratives to distortion-fueled garage rock to soundscape abstractions and more. Most often a trio (though occasionally just Jeffrey solo, or as a duo, and on some tours as a four-piece), the Jeffrey Lewis group has shuffled its name a number of times over the years, from Jeffrey Lewis & The Creeping Brains to Jeffrey Lewis & The Jitters, Jeffrey Lewis & The Jackals, Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard, and others, in 2013 becoming Jeffrey Lewis & The Rain.

Chris Famer is of vaguely British origin and a self-taught gardener, linguist, musician, artist who composes and improvises in all of these media.

Since early age he has been influenced/obsessed by song and sound, and especially how it can be transformed or dismantled, as seen in the works of Anthony Milton, Michael Gira, Richard Skelton.

With this in mind, he has gardened, translated and created his way through France, Belgium and the UK since the early 1990s.

He currently experiments with the relation between languages, culture, sound, structure, horticulture and art, in various (random) combinations.

His quest is to find the poetry in noise and the botany of language, hoping to one day compile a formally chaotic and above all subjective monograph of the world that confronts him (us) every day.

Live, he combines voice and guitar with loops and electronic resonances into an improvised landscape of word and sound.

In November 2012 he released his first solo album "a brief history of crossings out", produced and mixed by Guillaime Le Boisselier with a sleeve designed by Deborah Robbiano.

Starting from radical improvisation, the band achieves to forge a sound which, today, is built on strong rock textures, guitar and drums based, on which a fluxus of outer sounds (old movies, old vinyls cut ups, noise streams and real time audio manipulations) ties and rages. In 2007 they release their self titled debut album, scarcely 30 minutes between noise and kraut rock, the themes being glorious (La Resistenza against fascism) and dark ('60 and '70 state terrorism) moments of contemporary italian history. In 2009, with the second album Comunicato n.2, the music gets more brutal and heavy, while the band gives voice back to those who have tried to revolt against the inhuman capitalist world order. From 2007 to these days, Fuzz Orchestra has been playing live restlessly in Italy and Europe.

Grégory Duby (Jesus Is My Son, K-Branding, Himself) resurrects one if its cultest project to celebrate the 4 years of Cheap Satanism.

    MARTIN BISI (us)

Martin Bisi, a New York indie rock performer and record producer has been at a crossroads of indie, punk, avant garde, noire/cabaret rock, and electronic music since the early 80's in New York City.

At a recording studio he started in 1981 with the help of Brian Eno, Martin Bisi has realized albums by Bee And Flower, Woman, Sonic Youth, Swans, Material/Bill Laswell, Boredoms, Dresden Dolls, Cop Shoot Cop, John Zorn, Africa Bambaataa, Herbie Hancock's Rockit, White Zombie, Foetus, Helmet, Unsane, Serena Maneesh, US Maple, Jon Spencer's Boss Hog, and countless other indie, experimental and post-punk records.

In his own live performances, Bisi continues his history of sonic excess and layering, which can be ambient and disorienting, and swings between heavier post-rock and indie songs, and intimate and entertaining interludes.

von Stroheim is a new music project which could be described as cinematic doom.

    ENABLERS (us)

Enablers are an indie rock band from San Francisco, California which features the poetry/spoken word of Pete Simonelli.

In addition to Simonelli, a published poet and writer who was working as a courier in the band's early years, the band's original lineup included Joe Goldring (guitar, formerly of Swans and Toiling Midgets and Touched by a Janitor), Kevin Thomson (guitar, Timco, Nice Strong Arm, Morning Champ, and Touched by a Janitor), and Yuma Joe Byrnes (drums, ex-Tarnation/Broken Horse, Touched by a Janitor). Enablers' first release the album End Note, released on Neurot Recordings in 2004. In 2006 they released the Output Negative Space album, described by PopMatters as having "a swagger that seems almost malevolent", and a split single with Redpanda. In 2007 they released the single-sided one track twelve-inch single The Achievement. In 2008 they released the Tundra album, a shared release between Lancashire and Somerset and Exile on Mainstream. The band's latest album is Blown Realms And Stalled Explosions, released in 2011. Doug Scharin, formerly of Codeine, HiM, June of 44, Rex, and Mice Parade, is now the band's drummer.

    JOY AS A TOY (be)

"If you miss Stereolab and Mr. Bungle—and I think we all do—then you owe it to yourself to give a listen to the Belgian threesome Joy as a Toy. The specters of those progressive pop geniuses loom over all three-and-a-half glorious minutes, from the angular start-stop rhythms, to the brassy freak-outs in the middle, to the vibraphones throughout which sound straight off Stereolab’s Emperor Tomato Ketchup."

    POIL (fr)

Impressive and delirious, PoiL is lead by three musicians know not limitations and prohibitions.

PoiL flow, dance and dash between the energy of punk, the beauty of chamber music and the chaos of a factory on the brink of explosion.

The trio combines raw madness and virtuosity evoking thoughts of Frank Zappa, Frederic Chopin and Charlie Chaplin.

In the audience, the heads bang, the cries burst forth. Jubilant and stock!

Live Footage is often described as some of the finest "surrealist soundtrack composers" in the making by scoring some of the most eclectic contemporary pieces in film, fashion, dance and in tune composing their own music. The days of a "standard band" have come to an end, and Live Footage epitomizes the modern band to the fullest. Conceived through the art of improvisation, Topu Lyo plays a 5 string electric cello, incorporating the use of live loops and a handful of electronics with no pre-recorded samples of any kind, and Mike Thies plays drums and keyboards, often simultaneously. This duo's formula is uniquely structured songs that allow ample room for improvisation while keeping the music’s integrity. The coherent complexity is what consistently wows new listener's ears away. Plain and simple, they are cinematic, experimental, yet still catchy and melodic. To define this Brooklyn duo's sound deems a broad answer. Elements of Dub, and Hip Hop can be heard alongside influences of psychedelic post rock, and jazz. They are equally at home playing underground Brooklyn loft parties, as they are playing concert halls. The NYC music scene has served as their platform for more than 5 years and audiences around the world have praised their work.

    CORTEZ (ch)

Phœbus, the new album of Cortez, confirms the come back of the Swiss trio, just after the release of their 10’’ split with Plebeian Grandstand, on the labels Throatruiner Records, Basement Apes Industries and Get A Life ! Records. With this album Cortez is again proving that you can get out of the habitual pattern of power trio (guitar, drums and voice), and still burps noise-hardcore fury and incandescent anger. The band recently reorganized itself with the arrival of Antoine Tinguely on the guitar (ex-Berserk For Tea Time), Samuel Vaney, former guitarist, is now supporting the band as composer / mixer.

”Phoebus” reaffirms the taste of Cortez for saturation, but also explores a wide range of possibilities. Like a threatening and corrosive mist the aggressive sound still remains intense, melancholic and emotional.

As a reminder, Cortez, formed in 2001, was revealed in 2005 and the horrific world of their first album Initial, was praised by unanimous reviews. After the release followed several tours in Europe, during which the group forged a reputation of exceptional performers. Sharing the stage with The Dilinger Escape Plan, Isis, Unsane, Jesu, Gojira, Burst, The Ocean… Each occurrence tended to confirm and affirm their originality and mastering of their subject.

    MARTELEUR (be)

When a bassist solo project is called" Marteleur", can it only hit and rust out? Let us set aside this false image of a blacksmith. He changes his 'four strings' for the baritone guitar, an hybrid instrument. And then start pounding smoothly. Or rather, let Marteleur support its catchy rhythm in loops. Let him set his riffs, build his melodic frame and polish tirelessly electric atmospheres to see rising 'Chamber noise' instrumental music.

But do not forget that Marteleur is primarily a bassist. The minimalist atmosphere does not stay long. He use it to assemble its musical elements in long progressions, to build music that fly off and that we will look over the waves.

The second album of Marteleur My Anvil Is My Tuning Fork so consistently extends his work as a builder began with 'First Blows' in 2007. A laboratory that has as simple utensils a 'looper' and 'distortion' pedal but where research raises, throughout each piece, new elixirs.

  • 26/03/2014 > Zëro + Clément Nourry @ Café Central

    ZËRO (fr)

Obviously, Zëro’s music has more to do with creativity than with staying in the beaten path of rock with a specific identity. It's as much Jack Berrocal and Gene Vincent playing a Drag Queen blues under ecstasy, as it is the krautrock by Can and Kraftwerk in Luna Park, an entertaining song which provokes an addictive cerebral experience.

You can also hear some Cramps in a devastating Sick to the bones, Battles during an improbable Viandox and a bunch of other freaks, who, all off the beaten path have constantly re-written the language of rock with intelligence and singularity.

Each title escapes from the previous one, unclassifiable, escaping from the routine, leaving the listener with a smile and a chuckle. The music is like the smirk of an illusionist about to open his magic box. Pleasure and surprise are always present.

The fourth ablum from Zëro, Places where we go in dreams will be released in March on Ici d'ailleurs.

"…my solo project , it’s at the same time an experimental laboratory, an old attic filled with memories and a boxing ring. This is the place where all my musical influences can melt in one unique stream. Depeche Mode, John Fahey, Gesualdo, the Ex, all of those things through a single guy playing guitar… "

Three years have passed since Clement Nourry began to play his solo, in Belgium, Germany and France, enjoying wild improvisations, exploring his own way of composing, keeping all along in his mind the word "song"
Doing this,he developed a living and original way of playing guitar.

Nobody can say how will sound his next performances….

He recorded his first solo Album Sobre in 2007, trying since then to build the packing with his own hands, spending hours sticking cardboard.

Blind Thorns is a new project featuring Ahleuchatistas' Shane Perlowin (USA) on guitar and Ryan Oslance (USA) on drums with Antoine Läng (CH) on vocals.

Blind Thorns plays haunting improvised noise-rock music based on pre-defined structures.

Blind Thorns' debut album will be released in April on Cheap Satanism Records / Tandori Records / New Atlantis Records

  • 10/04/2014 > Puce Moment @ Café Central

Kenneth Anger may not necessarily be the name that will come to mind when listening for the first time - distracted, confused, disoriented - to Puce Moment's debut album. Yet it is the only one that will seem relevant upon second listen -narcotic, infernal, fascinating.

Puce Moment does not only borrow a title (of his eighth short film, made in 1949) from the baron noir of experimental cinema. Ghostly wanderings, satanic Masses, mystical romances, mechanical hell : everything in the duo from Lille (France) and their album in form of an invocation to ancient Sybarites authorities refers to the Californian filmmaker's obsessions.

Launched in 2006 by Nicolas Devos and Penelope Michel, along with their project Cercueil (responsible for three albums particularly noteworthy), Puce Moment has so far existed mainly on stage, diluted over time (a handful of concerts only) and image ( projections, performances or contemporary dance pieces).

Ice, dust and blinding flashes of white light : Puce Moment had the scene, the soul and backbone were only missing. This will be achieved in 2012. Isolated in a cabin, the duo composed and recorded nine songs that make up their first album, between spectral marauding (Moonoom) and drone wizards (Legacy), resurrecting old ghosts (Video Dada single title survivor of their invisible past), revealing the first images of a future draped in chrome (L'ombre, composed for choreographe (Christian Rizzo's new project ).

Mastered by Joe Lambert (Animal Collective, Young Magic, Dirty Projectors), Puce Moment is both the sum of a singular journey, fueled by forays into dance and cinema - a confirmation of their simply unreal abilities - and the beginning of a long and disturbing procession.

Their next step will be the stage for which the group is preparing a set modeled after their music: blazing, poisonous, untouchable, but always human.

  • 12/04/2014 > ZomBIFFF Night #4 @ Café Central

Cheap Satanism Records is teaming up again with Café Central to invite zombies from all walks of life to strut their stuff free of charge at the fourth ZomBIFFF Night. On the program, a showcase from the Brussels duo In Heaven for the release of their first album. We reassure all the living dead: the band has nothing to do with Heaven, except for the name! They will throw you in a twilight atmosphere where Nick Cave flirts with Beth Gibbons on Angelo Badalamenti’s old soundtracks. After ? The frenchies from Cercueil, Hypo & EDH and La Trayeuse Electrique will behead all the zombies with their badass LP’s ! Shows will take place at the Café Central from 9 pm and, most of all, for free!

    IN HEAVEN (be)

In heaven was formed around the dueling talents of Monsieur Whiteman and Dominique Van Cappellen-Waldock (Keiki, Baby Fire...) and it captures the chill of stormy weather, interspersed with rare sunny spells.
Imagine Nick Cave snogging Beth Gibbons to an Angelo Badalamenti soundtrack.
    If you can.

    DJ: CERCUEIL (fr)

Ghost opera, still life poetry and black divas's rage who break the crystal, Cerceuil sounds like opioid sensuality, electro sewn with gold thread, noisy new-wave and icy core.

Created in 2005 by Nicolas Devos and Penelope Michel, Cercueil is a french trio from Lille which has released its second album Erostrate in 2011.

Cercueil's members have worked on several side projects in contemporary arts including audio and visual installations, composing soundscapes and soundtracks to movies, performances, animation movies and general electronic experimentation and interpretation... Some of those works can be found under the name of Puce Moment.

    DJ: HYPO & EDH (fr)

EDH and Hypo are two french musicians who have both prolific solo careers since the beginning of the 2000's.

Hypo & EDH are also a band, a duo, more precisely a two-headed monster that steadily appears on stage as well as in the studio to produce a unique, challenging music, which is pop and experimental at the same time, swinging and melancholic, electronic and organic.

The duo's second album Xin has been released on Lentonia Records and Cheap Satanism Records.

  • 08/05/2014 > Alex June + Lem @ Café Central

    ALEX JUNE (cl)

    LEM (be)

Pooling together a group of influences as diverse as its members, Bestial Mouths present a raw, synth-driven energy propelled by singer Lynette Cerezo's powerful vocals. Often likened to Diamanda Galas, Siouxsie Sioux or Lydia Lunch, Cerezo delivers each note with fury and abandon. Synthesists/keyboardists Christopher Myrick and Gustavo Aldana channel early industrial, EBM, goth and minimal synth pop in turns, blending harsh electronics and lush melodies. When fused to Aldana’s splintered programmed beats and the tribal rhythms and samples of drummer Jessica Reuter, the harmonics combine to breathe new life into post punk, weaving their own distinct creation in the process.

    MYYTHS (uk)

MYYTHS is Syd S. and Tiffany S.
The pair met in Brighton, Uk, during winter 2012. brought together by a love for similar artists and each others music. A desire to work together quickly grew and after several months of songwriting collaboration, they released an EP and started gigging as a four piece under the name Fvnerals.
In the fall of 2013, the duo started working on a side project experimenting with electronic production. MYYTHS was born. Tystnad was written as a whole, a journey through existence where each song forms an intricate portrait, experimenting with electronic textures, traditional instruments and percussion’s to create haunting sounds while lyrics revolve around unrequited love, nothingness and devotion.

  • 12/06/2014 > OS OVNI + Hypo & EDH @ Café Central

    OS OVNI (us)

OS OVNI conjure one of strangest, most imaginative sonic worlds out there. In fact, we can’t really think of another contemporary underground synth band that sounds quite like them. Here, I’ll give it a shot: imagine Xeno & Oaklander minus the heart wrenching melancholia, and instead of the signature cold starkness associated with neo-minimal synth, replace it with a spacey, somewhat creepy, but altogether visionary cosmic occultism.

  • 13/08/2014 > Chelsea Wolfe + Mongolito @ Le BRASS

How often nowadays do we read of an artist’s “intensity”, or their rhetorical, one-of-a-kind individuality? Journalistic hyperbole routinely contorts the mundane into the “epic”, the tired into the inspired, all the while heaping praise on performers as seemingly vacuous and generic as possible. Navigating the landscape of contemporary alternative music can be an exercise in redundancy; true visionaries and boundary-pushers are few and far between. Enter Chelsea Wolfe. To simply call Wolfe unique would be an understatement. Even among her peers in the so-called “drone-metal-art-folk” scene she’s an icon, a stand-alone singer/songwriter whose fully-formed aesthetic and haunting timelessness appear almost without effort.

    MONGOLITO (be)

Mongolito is guitarist Marc De Backer solo project. Lost in darkness dephts of love, hate, red wine and Brussels. Giving a particular and original dimension to his guitar sounds, emerging between loops, variable tempos and drones.

Cheap Satanism Records celebrates its 5th birthday by welcoming Helluvah in his catalog. Helluvah will present its upcoming album that we plan to release in 2015. After the gig, there will an be evilish after party with our faithful Cha!Selektor and Les Moustaches de L'espace (aka Joy As A Toy).

    HELLUVAH (fr)

Born in Paris in 1982, Camille Warmé had a first band called Fog aged 17 when she was living in Nice, in the south of France.
Then she went back to Paris to go the university and launched her solo project, Helluvah.

A first demo (Lost in progress) in 2006 gave her the opportunity to play in France and across Europe. Comparisons with PJ Harvey and Shanon Wright were made.

Her first record, Emotion Pills, was released in 2008 on Blog Up Music, and got good press in the indie medias.

The second one, As we move silently was released in 2011 and showed her rock ‘n’ roll side with its noisy guitars. Now on stage with BobX (drums, bass, sampler) her concerts became more and more intense and dynamic.

Guili Guili Goulag is a weird XP rock band influenced by African music, kraut rock, doom, punk… and a lot of other things. It consists in a harp, a bass, a drummer and a singer. The musicians were or are involved in various underground projects such as Duflan Duflan, Spoilature, Arts et Techniques

    WILL Z.

Will Z is one of the heads of Cosmic Trip Machine, one-man band and producer of Book of AM 'cult' project, inspired by a mixture of dark occult rock and positive acid-folk.

In 2011, Will Z. was totally immersed in The Book of AM he coproduced with Juan Arkotxa and Leslie MacKenzie. He discovered it was the kind of music he wanted to play, but felt it would be a solo adventure. After the release of a totally improvised meditation opus called Shambhala album in almost 10 days, his new idea was to create the "negative" version of this first solo album.

He worked at NoHype Studio on an album called 12 Visions, inspired by the island of Mallorca, The twelve philosophical keys, a book by Basil Valentine (allegedly an alchemist monk), illustrated by Michel Maïer and J-K Huysmans novel, Là-bas, using the Brian Wilson Smile method: to record different parts as individual songs and to make a montage to obtain a final track. The highlight of this "evil" period was Hermetic Spell, a black musical mass exploring unknown and terrifying landscapes, recorded with his band, Cosmic Trip Machine, and Alice Artaud, by night, only with candles lights and all dressed in capes. 12 Visions, divided in two parts, a white side and a black side, was out in December 2013 at Anazitisi Records/69 Watt and featuring Juan Arkotxa from Book of AM on flute.

After his work on The Book of Intxixu, sequel of Book of AM with Leslie MacKenzie, Juan Arkotxa, Carmeta Mansilla plus Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth from Gong, Will Z. recorded his third project, a collection of dark electric numbers, originally composed for the final part of 12 Visions; positive folk songs based on prehistoric legends of Menorca island and tracks composed during Will Z. teenage musical years. The result of all these sessions was two albums : Jellyfish Island - mainly folk, produced by oG and unreleased - and Dark Tales of Will Z. - mainly rock and out in September 2014 at HeadSpin Records.
