OTTIS TOOLE was known for being HENRY LEE LUCAS' lover and accomplice. This inspired film-maker JOHN MCNAUGHTON for "Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer". Toole was also a cannibal and a pyromaniac. In a filmed interview he once explained how excited he would get when, for instance, he succeeded in setting a mattress alight. Such a fire he would call a "baby fire".

His tragic life inspired DOMINIQUE VAN CAPPELLEN-WALDOCK who started Baby Fire as a solo project. She met drummer CHA! at a Cheap Satanism Records' party. In January 2010, they started rehearsing and within a few months they were opening for bands such as HRSTA, PART CHIMP, CJ BOYD, LYDIA LUNCH & THE BIG SEXY NOISE...

Their debut album named "No Fear" is released on Cheap Satanism Records and it will feature special guests DANA SCHECHTER (BEE AND FLOWER, THE ANGELS OF LIGHT...) and EUGENE ROBINSON (OXBOW).

The album's sound is raw and organic, and it's mood very different from the bitter-sweetness that can be found in the band members' other projects. Dominique Van Cappellen-Waldock is also a member of KEIKI and Cha! plays in LEM and LADY FUCKED UP. The lyrics emphasize Baby Fire's dark side: some songs were influenced by Ottis Toole's penchant for human flesh ("Everybody's Got a Hungry Heart", "I Love to Cook"), others evoke the obsession of a teenager with the ghost of a deceased alcoholic rock star ("Sober") or were inspired by the madness of TIMOTY TREADWELL ("Insect/flower").

The duo's influences are multiple. Dominique Van Cappellen-Waldock is a fan of SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES and of RIOT GRRRL bands. She also admits to having listened to a lot of heavy metal in the Eighties (GIRLSCHOOL, METALLICA...). Cha! was influenced by MR BUNGLE, PIXIES and by drummer CHES SMITH.

Mort en prison d'une cirrhose du foie en 1996, Ottis Toole était un tueur en série américain connu pour être l'amant et le complice de HENRY LEE LUCAS. Leur relation troublée inspira le film culte "Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer", de JOHN MC NAUGHTON. Toole était aussi cannibale et pyromane. Il a largement expliqué aux journalistes combien il pouvait trouver excitant de mettre le feu à un simple matelas. Il appelait ça un "baby fire".

Très inspirées par le terme et son contexte, DOMINIQUE VAN CAPPELLEN-WALDOCK et CHA! -qui se sont rencontrées lors d'une soirée Cheap Satanism Records en décembre 2009- se sont extrêmement rapidement construit un répertoire qui leur a déjà permis de prester de très belles premières parties: HRSTA, CJ BOYD, PART CHIMP, LYDIA LUNCH & THE BIG SEXY NOISE... Plus rapides qu'un feu de matelas, elles entrent en studio en septembre 2010 avec des invités de marque comme l'imposant leader d'OXBOW, EUGENE ROBINSON, et la ténébreuse DANA SCHECHTER de BEE AND FLOWER. Le résultat s'intitule "No Fear" et sortira en mars 2011 sur Cheap Satanism Records.

Avec ce premier album, le duo nous livre un rock brut et viscéral bien loin des univers doux-amers auxquels ses membres nous ont habitués avec leurs autres formations respectives. Dominique Van Cappellen-Waldock officie également chez KEIKI et Cha! est également active dans LEM et LADY FUCKED UP. Les textes confortent cette impression. Avec des morceaux directement influencés par le cannibalisme d'Ottis Toole ("Everybody's Got a Hungry Heart", "I Love to Cook"), d'autres décrivant une obsession adolescente pour le fantôme d'un rock star alcoolique ("Sober") ou inspiré de la folie de Timothy Treadwell ("Insect/Flower"), il ne fait aucun doute que Baby Fire ne craint pas de froisser les âmes sensibles.

A la question des influences, Dominique Van Cappellen-Waldock reconnaît celles du mouvement RIOT GRRRL, de SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES, ainsi que du Metal des années 80 (GIRLSCHOOL, METALLICA...). Cha! Cite de son côté MR BUNGLE, CHES SMITH et les PIXIES.
