VITAS GUERULAITIS are a Belgian trio bearing the misspelled name of a dead Argentine tennis legend. Their music is impossible to classify.

After a debut album whose hidden title tested all but the most playful listeners, the band returns with "Le Tigre". It is the title of their new album recorded by ETIENNE FOYER (DRAGIBUS, THE EX, DEERHOOF, ANTHONY PATERAS, etc.) at LES ATELIERS CLAUS in Brussels. It is available on CD and in digital version from Cheap Satanism Records and on vinyl record by a bunch of friend labels: AREDJE, ATTILA TRALALA, DO IT YOUSSEF, S.K., TANDORI RECORDS, WHOSBRAIN RECORDS, ROCK N' ROLL MASTURBATION.

In Le Tigre, the songs are titled "Os de source", "Dépouillage", "Classic Indic". CÉLIA JANKOWSKI sings word bits with the beautiful voice of a female flute or female drum. She builds her singing up on keyboard riffs, all making colourful hammocks. ISMAËL COLOMBANI, the bear-bird as wise as a savage, puts other word bits around his precious guitar as DAVID COSTENARO knits away on drums, like a woodpecker with intermittent screams of "ouhhhh". The band's unique sound is consciously crowded, like a jungle, wrapping you round like vines. Lyrics stop and start like musical chairs.

When you piece together their little chunks of shattered words, the effect goes beyond metaphor. It's not surrealism; nor realism. You could call it "surprism", surprise and prism. Blocked and then unblocked musical motifs in turn unleashing emotive reactions, making joints more supple and heightening circulation. You never can quite tell if the music is becoming over-elaborate to mirror the lyrics or if the lyrics are moulding themselves top the staccato rhythm. Words are arranged around the musical arrangements, and vice-versa. Friendly agreement.

"Le Tigre" might not be that serious but it is beautiful, like a chandelier in the jungle, reflecting and refracting light in such a way that people blink, bugs run and babies sneeze.

Dans "Le Tigre", les chansons s'appellent "Os de source", "Dépouillage", "Classic Indic"… CÉLIA JANKOWSKI chante des morceaux de mot avec sa belle voix de femme-flûte ou de femme-tambour. Elle tisse son chant sur des riffs de clavier. Cela fait des hamacs colorés. ISMAËL COLOMBANI, ours-oiseau, sage comme un sauvage, enfile d'autres bouts de mot autour de sa guitare précieuse. DAVID COSTENARO y tricote sa batterie. Cela tient plus d'un pic-vert. Parfois, il crie “Ouh !” Ça fait de la cohue. Ça fait de la jungle. Ça touffe. Dans les chansons, il y a des mots qui s'arrêtent et qui recommencent ensuite. C'est comme ce jeu “Un, deux, trois… soleil”.

Quand tu rassembles les petits morceaux de mots brisés, c'est plus fort que des métaphores. Ce n'est pas du surréalisme. Ce n'est pas du réalisme. C'est plus du surprisme, de la surprise et du prisme. Cela crée des motifs bloqués, puis débloqués. Et tous ces motifs bloqués, cela débloque les émotifs. Ça assouplit les articulations et cela active la circulation. On ne sait pas trop si c'est la musique qui tarabiscote pour suivre les mots ou si ce sont les paroles qui s'adaptent aux saccades. Les mots s'arrangent avec les arrangements qui s'arrangent avec les mots. Entente cordiale.

Pas papou. Pas papa. Pas pinpin. Mais presque.

"Le tigre" n'est pas sérieux mais il est beau, un peu comme un lustre dans la jungle, avec des reflets qui font cligner des yeux, courir les insectes et éternuer les bébés.
